Boaters and Prescription Medication

We know the summer is coming to an end but there are still a few weekends left to take the boat out. Just remember to be safe when doing so.

Prescription medication can be dangerous if overused or taken with alcohol. The labels clearly detail not to operate heavy machinery or take while drinking as the medications can bring on unwanted side effects. This is especially true to boaters who are on the water and far from emergency personnel. Being on the water exposes people to heat, cold, wind, motion and noise which could potentially cause fatigue to settle in quickly. Lack of shade and over exposure to the sun along with the changing water conditions can also bring on dehydration, dizziness and exhaustion. Drowsiness and confusion will impair the ability to operate a boat safely.

Recognize the signs of medical distress and call for help should you need it. According to the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Public Affairs Office, there is an easy acronym for remembering to keep safe and it’s called BOAT SAFE. Below are the full details:

  • Bring plenty to eat and drink to avoid dehydration
  • Operate the boat in a safe and responsible manner
  • Always wear a life jacket
  • Take a boating safety course
  • Sun, wind and temperatures can be more of a factor than boaters believe
  • Annual courtesy vessel safe check
  • File a float plan and leave it with someone who will take action if overdue
  • Evaluate the readiness of operating crew and passengers – it is ok to not get underway if there is doubt

It is always imperative to take every precaution before entering the water. This helpful list from the Coast Guard should be a great reminder of the bare minimum to do each year.
